This is the first post by Andrew McCarten. I’ll let Andrew introduce himself, if he wants to.

In this article, I hope to provide you with some useful tips and strategies that I have come across during my time playing FIFA 2008. I hope you find the helpful and good look with the game!

CORNER KICKS

Corner kicks are a great opportunity to score in the game, and the easiest way to capitalize on them is by using in-swingers. For your left corner, have a right-footed player take it, and vice-versa for a right corner. For example, when playing with the Republic of Ireland, Aiden McGeady is best suited for left corner, while Damien Duff is best for a right corner. Fill the meter about 2/3 full while pressing the O button, and the ball will ideally find a player at the closer end of the 6 yard box.

PENALTY KICKS WITH THE CHIP SHOT

When presented with a penalty kick, you have great odds of scoring. To make those odds even greater, utilize the chip shot to leave the keeper helpless as you score. The chip is especially useful because unless you shoot down the middle, the goalkeeper has virtually no chance. If you watch a keeper attempt to move left or right while saving a penalty, they always dive quickly, anticipating the shot being struck and moving at a quick pace. For example, say you chip the shot to the right of the keeper. Even if he guesses correctly, he will go to ground too quickly and the shot will float into the net, over the keeper who is now on the ground.

DRAWING IN THE DEFENDER IN A TWO ON ONE SITUATION

When faced with a two-on-one situation, many players often find themselves having wasted chances because the ball was stolen by the lone defender. There is a way to draw in the defender that almost always works. As you are dribbling down the field towards goal, hold on to the ball as long as you can. When the defender makes a break at you, quickly pass the ball to the other player. He will be wide open to take on the keeper, and will be played onside providing you get the pass off in a timely manner.

USING THE 4-1-2-1-2 FORMATION

Although many teams in the game use the 4-4-2 formation, using the 4-1-2-1-2 will give you the attacking edge needed to pressure the defense and create scoring opportunities. This formation enables the use of the central attacking midfielder, or “in the hole” role much like we have seen Steven Gerrard and Alessandro Del Piero. In addition, a striker will often be able to play the CAM role without losing any points on his rating, so you won’t have to buy a new player. This formation also enables you to penetrate the flanks with you midfield pair, and use a central defensive midfielder, like Gennaro Gattuso and Kevin Kilbane. They provide a good protection for the back four, neutralize the attack, and can even push up to help on the attack.

AND FINALLY, A WAY TO MAKE THE GAME EVEN MORE INTERESTING……

After playing manager mode for a few seasons with various teams, the game might become a bit stale. A great way I’ve found to make the game both fun and challenging is by taking a club from League Two all the way to the Premier League. With England having four leagues in the game, it makes this a daunting yet enjoyable task. This journey will challenge your playing and club management skills, as dealing with finances and tough choices on who to keep and who to release. It is a rewarding experience which will be sure to provide you with exciting game play. Your friends may give you odd looks when the next time you take them on, it’s with Chesterfield or Morecambe instead of Barcelona or Chelsea.
